This award is designed for leaders of groups of 4-5 paddlers on 6 to 8 miles/3hours journey in moderate tidal waters with winds not exceeding force4/sea state 4. The training course will cover the following core areas:

  • Safety and rescue techniques in moderate sea conditions
  • Coastal navigation skill (practical afloat and shore-based classroom)

Note: The British Canoeing Sea Kayaking Leader (moderate water) Award was formerly known as the 4 Star Sea Kayak Leader Award. The title changed in 2017, although the training and assessment content remains the same.

British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leader Award Training (Five Star Equivalent)

Aim: Successful performance at this level indicates that a candidate has the personal skill level, leadership ability and judgment to lead paddlers with a range of experience, up to and including advanced tidal water. The British Canoeing Advanced Sea Kayak Leader has the skills and judgment to select appropriate environments for paddlers with a range of experience. The British Canoeing Advanced Sea Kayak Leader Award is a leadership award and not a coaching award. Candidates are assessed to a verifiable common level, regional and climatic variations notwithstanding.

This award is intended for paddlers who journey on the sea in areas where tidal races, headlands, open crossings, swell and challenging coastlines will be encountered. The award should be accessible to all those people who journey on the sea on a regular basis and should not be seen as the preserve of a few elite performers. It is envisaged that a committed club paddler, sea kayaking regularly in a suitable range of situations, sea areas and conditions should be able to obtain this award within a period of 3 years.

NOTE: The British Canoeing Advanced Sea Kayak Leader Award was formerly known as the 5 Star Sea Kayak Leader Award. The title changed in 2017, although the training and assessment content remains the same.

Training for this award is a 3-day course and includes the British Canoeing Open Water Navigation and Tidal Planning component. The Open Water Navigation and Tidal Planning training is designed for paddlers carrying out open water journeys including islands over 2 nautical miles offshore in areas of strong tidal movement of 3+ knots and/or including winds of up to force 5. The content of the navigation component builds directly on the themes covered in the Coastal and Tidal Planning training and seeks to develop the candidate’s knowledge and understanding of the areas below as applied in an advanced water environment:

  • To interpret sources of relevant information including maps, charts, coastal pilots, tide tables and tidal stream atlases
  • To apply the above relevant information in calculating vectors and negotiating open crossings and/or coastlines with no landing zones and/or tide races and overfalls
  • To develop the necessary knowledge to navigate on the water using advanced pilotage techniques in poor visibility or hours of darkness
  • By the end of the course, each candidate should have planned at least 2 open crossings that they can take home as references for further trip planning.
  • Candidates should also be aware of the range of resources they require to plan trips in any sea area.

Full details of the course content, training course syllabus, and British Canoeing National Governing Body information can be found here. Questions contact John at john@seacliffkayakers.com.
