Whitewater Kayak Classes

Note: Due to high flows, all whitewater kayak classes are being pushed back to July.  This is based on the assumption that flows will go down to their normal levels (~2000 cfs) by then.

 

Whitewater Splash Quickstart:

 If running rapids in a kayak sounds fun then this class is a great way to quickly get yourself immersed in the action! Sit-on-Top kayaks designed for whitewater are super stable and easy to use. After learning some fundamentals of river safety and how to control the kayak, our expert instructors will be leading you down rapids up to Class II. You'll have so much fun you'll want to come back for more!

Cost: $99 Minimum Enrollment: 3; Maximum Enrollment: 8 (with 2 instructors)

Includes kayak, kayaking equipment and river permit.

Duration of class: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Time on water: Approximately 5 hours

Location: CCK Coloma Outpost and the South Fork American River from Coloma to Lotus

Prerequisite: No previous kayaking experience is required; however, good physical condition is important to ensure an enjoyable class; river kayaking can be strenuous! The minimum age for Whitewater Splash Kayak QuickStart is 14 years; children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. 

Whitewater Kayak Essentials (Two Day):

 Start exploring rivers the right way with professional instruction from California Canoe & Kayak. Reliable flows and great weather make the South Fork American River one of the best rivers to learn on in the world. This two day class will cover balance and control of the kayak, self-rescue and safety fundamentals while learning to navigate rapids up to Class II. We emphasize safety, enjoyment and skill acquisition using sit-inside kayaks. Sit-on-Top kayaks are available by request.

Cost: $229.00 Minimum Enrollment: 3; Maximum Enrollment: 8 (with 2 instructors)

Includes kayak, kayaking equipment and river permit.

Duration of class: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM (2 days)
Time on water: Approximately 5 hours each day

Location: CCK Coloma Outpost and the South Fork American River from Coloma to Lotus

Whitewater Kayak Skills Development I (River Running):

The first class in our Whitewater Kayak Skills Development series, this class is taught on the South Fork of the American River from Coloma to Greenwood Creek. Catch those eddies, learn to ferry with finesse, practice and apply the skills learned in our Whitewater Kayaking Essentials class with coaching from our expert instructors on class II whitewater. The goal of the Whitewater Kayak Skills Development series is to make you a self-sufficient paddler ready to explore the river with friends of the same skill level. Take this first River Running class for a smooth transition into the realm of down river paddling. Let the adventure begin!

Whitewater Kayak Skills Development II (Advanced River Running):

 The second in our Whitewater Kayak Skills Development series, this class is taught while paddling on the Class III Gorge section of the South Fork American River. You will be performing jet ferries, surfing, ascending rapids, combat rolling and performing self and assisted rescues. The goal of the Whitewater Kayak Skills Development series is to make you a self-sufficient paddler ready to explore the river with friends of the same skill level. Take this class when you are ready to make the transition from Class II to Class III rivers.

Prerequisite: Whitewater Kayak Skills Development - River Running (Class II) or equivalent training and experience. Good physical condition is important to ensure an enjoyable class; river kayaking can be strenuous! The minimum age for this class is 14 years; children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. 

Whitewater Kayak Skills Development III (Creeking):

 The third class in the Whitewater Kayak Skills Development series, this class is taught on the South Fork American River Class III+ Chili Bar section. Learning to boof and other advanced strokes, scouting the river from land and from your kayak, working as a team to place safety and dealing with rescue scenarios will all be covered during this class. The goal of the Whitewater Kayak Skills Development series is to make you a self-sufficient paddler ready to explore the river with friends of the same skill level. Take this class when you are ready to make the transition to steeper rivers and creeks.

Cost: $129 Minimum Enrollment: 3; Maximum Enrollment: 8 (with 2 instructors)

Time on water: Approximately 5 hours

Location: CCK Coloma Outpost and the South Fork American River (Chilli Bar Section)

Prerequisite: Whitewater Kayak Skills Development - Advanced River Running (Class III). Good physical condition is important to ensure an enjoyable class; river kayaking can be strenuous! The minimum age for this class is 14 years; children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

 

Whitewater Kayak Skills Development IV (Playboating):

 The final class in the Whitewater Kayak Skills Development series, this class is taught on the South Fork American River Class III Chili Bar section. Want to learn to surf, cartwheel, stern squirt, loop, and perform moves you've never heard of? Our expert coaches will have you throwing ends and playing the river like never before. The goal of the Whitewater Kayak Skills Development series is to make you a self-sufficient paddler ready to play the river with friends of the same skill level. Demo playboats are available for this class.
