Mendocino Caves and Waves Tour
California Canoe & Kayak has not offered a trip to Mendocino for a few years. We felt it was time to return to one of the very best sea kayaking locations in the world. What makes Mendocino so incredible is the sheer density and variety of coastal features. Several large river estuaries and numerous creeks divide up the coastline into a series of headlands and bays, providing easy access to open water in almost any sea state. Fractured rocks and numerous fault lines produced from seismic activity are exploited by powerful Pacific swells to produce a seemingly endless network of sea caves and tunnels, some several hundred feet in length and many navigable by sea kayak in normal sea states.CCK instructors Bill Vonnegut and Sean Morley assisted by Lily Kelsey led eight participants on a two-day skills training tour of the coastline north of Russian Gulch and south of Van Damme State Parks. This was a highly skilled group of paddlers, several of whom are certified instructors in their own right. The weather and sea conditions co-operated which meant that we were able to really get the most out of every feature.
Perhaps the most famous of all is 'Disney' and everyone styled it.
The caves were truly magical. This one has a waterfall at the back of it.
This is a massive complex of caves, tunnels and arches.
We all camped at Russian Gulch State Park Campground and on Saturday night we were treated to a feast of a pot-luck meal – thank you to everyone for a truly memorable weekend. Let's plan another one soon!
